Senior Data Scientist

Senior Data Scientist (Position is a one-year contract, with an option to renew each year for three years.)

An AWDC data scientist will effectively use data to design evidence-based programs. You will apply your expertise of various statistical techniques to a wide variety of global projects in the fields of health and economic development to solve complex global issues. This is a unique opportunity to design and explore new avenues of social development. An ideal candidate will demonstrate a meticulous application of analytic techniques as well as originality in identifying non-traditional data sources.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducts end-to end research process, from data analytics to generating evidence-based public-facing documents.

  • Ensures analytic reports are developed on credible quantitative methodologies.

  • Balances multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to timelines for project deliverables.

  • Works on a technical team which simultaneously supports market research requests covering multiple global projects.

  • Provides graphical and table representations of data for annual reports.  

  • Collaborate with international communications directors to design evidence-based communications strategies.

Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree or Ph.D. in statistics, physics, mathematics, computer science.

  • Candidates with advanced degrees, preferably in the social sciences will be considered, provided 3+ years of statistical and/or computational experience and skills.  

  • Strong background in the fundamentals of machine learning and statistics.

  • Minimum of three years of experience conducting data analysis in R and/or Python.

  • Working knowledge of SQL or other languages used for analysis is a plus.

  • 1+ years of experience merging and analyzing large observational data sets.

  • Experience building predictive models and implementing them in a production environment is a plus.

  • Ability to work independently with little supervision as well as in a collaborative team environment.

  • The ability to explain complex technical material to nontechnical audiences

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Prior publication of work is a plus (please provide a link to portfolio)

West Africa Program Director

West Africa Program Director (Position is a one-year contract, with an option to renew each year for three years.)

The West Africa Program Director will lead the implementation of programs that drive social development. The Program Director will cultivate innovations that helps attract local stakeholders, and creates higher impact in developing communities by managing evidence-based social development programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with AWDC staff to translate market research findings into evidence-based programs.

  • Conduct responsible and efficient management of program funds.

  • Manage program-related data and documentation collected in the field.

  • Manage, track, and analyze key program developments and trends.

  • Develop project-related data reports for internal and external entities.

  • Ensure timely submission of high quality progress, financial, and evaluation reports.

  • Provide coaching and mentoring for field staff and oversee progress of their respective program portfolios.

  • Represent AWDC’s vision and goals to crucial program-related external constituencies.

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Public Health, Political Science, Public Policy, or related field and a minimum of 5 years of professional experience or a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Political Science, Public Policy, or related field and a minimum of 10 years of experience.

  • Bilingual in French and English.

  • Experience in designing and managing African regional programming in an international development setting.

  • Experience collaborating with multilateral organizations working to address social development issues in global communities.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative setting, and balance competing objectives with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to travel 25% of the time.

Latin America Communications Director

Latin America Communications Director (Position is a one-year contract, with an option to renew each year for three years.)

The Latin America Communications Director is a key part of implementing data-driven strategies for AWDC work in Colombia. The Communications Director will plan, develop, and implement effective communications campaigns and outreach strategies to recruit participants and raise awareness of AWDC offerings in assigned communities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with data scientists in the design of a results-oriented communications strategy.

  • Responsible for executing, monitoring, and evaluating the impact of complex AWDC communications strategies, activities, and campaigns.

  • Cultivate regional, national, and global media relationships to leverage the presence of AWDC in the media.

  • Draft and oversee multiple communications products; AWDC briefings for senior management, news releases, events, impact stories, blogs, and annual organization reports.

  • Ensure a strong and growing digital presence for AWDC across social media sites and blogs.  

  • Monitor and interpret current events, public and press opinions to determine risk management strategies.

  • Follow trends, news developments, and unforeseen circumstances that may impact AWDC’s work and propose strategic responses to address issues.

  • Work closely AWDC staff to align, coordinate and support communications around market research findings, initiatives, projects, and programs.

  • Supervise and mentor junior staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, International Relations/Public Affairs, Journalism or other related field with 3+ years of professional experience or Master’s degree in Communications, International Relations/Public Affairs, Journalism or other related field.

  • Bilingual English and Spanish.

  • Substantial knowledge of global social development issues.

  • Demonstrates in-depth proficiency in drafting and editing complex communications products covering global and social development issues.

  • Significant experience in developing content for internal and external communication products.

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and rapidly translate a wealth of information from varied sources.

  • Experience developing digital communications in blog and social media outlets.

  • Proven reporting or journalism coverage in news media outlet is a plus.

  • Ability to work independently with little supervision as well as in a collaborative team environment.
